Pumps
This is a typical pool pump. Note the parts of the pump. On the front of the pump you have a pump trap which has a basket that traps small debris and keeps it from clogging the pump. The pump body is where a "fanblade-like" impeller sucks in the water and forces it out the top of the pump. The pump motor is what drives the pump. The motor is air cooled while the pump is by its very nature water cooled.

This diagram illustrates how a pump operates. Water is drawn in the front of the pump, goes through the trap basket where the debris is strained out, and then is pulled into the impeller and thrust out the top of the pump. The front of the pump is referred to as the suction side and the top of the pump where the water comes out is referred to as the pressure side of the pump.

When selecting a pum for SPA or Pool it is important to determine the desired rate of flow in GPM (gallons per minute) it is also important to consider the flow rate of features such as SPAs, water features, and pool cleaners. It is also important to think about other features such as energy efficiency, ease of service and durability.

Filters
The best type of filter depends on the usage of the pool as well as the preferences of the pool owner/operator.
Filter Type |
Filter Media |
Filtration |
Frequency Cleaning |
Positive Points |
Negative Points |
Sand |
Sand |
Good 40 microns |
every week |
easy to backwash; filter media cheap |
poorest filtration |
DE |
Diatomaceous Earth |
Best; 5 microns |
every 4-8 weeks |
best filtration |
repairs are costly; media is harmful to health |
Cartridge |
Paper Filter |
Good 10 microns |
every 4-8 weeks |
simple to maintain |
costly to replace |
Once you have chosen the right type of filter for your pool, it is important to get it sized properly. It must be sized to match the pump which in turn must match the circulation needs of the pool. If the filter is undersized, it will fill up quickly and also can be damaged by the force of the pump.
On-site analysis must be done to insure that the filter matches up properly with the pump and the pool. For instance, if the plumbing runs on the equipment are particularly long, then the resistance to flow in the piping will be greater and intake lines may need to be larger.
It is always better to oversize the filter. With an oversized filter, the water flows through the filter media at a slower velocity and that results in finer filtration and longer filter cycles.

Motors
Acqua Nita Services carries a full line of replacement pump motors for your pool or spa pump. When it comes to replacement motors not all are created equal. Many stores have great prices on their replacement motors because they sell aftermarket motors. When it comes to these motors you are rolling the dice. We only carry replacement motors manufactured by A.O. Smith and Century. These brands are used by the major pool equipment manufactures and we offer them at great discounted prices.
It is also to important to be aware of what type of motor you are buying. There is a big difference between Up-Rated and Full Rated pump motors. In addition, Energy Efficient motors are also available for most pumps. These pumps can save you a lot of money in the long run.
